Our
institute is a small and effective faculty of architecture that trains European architects (that
is, ones who can be enrolled in section A of the national registers and can exercise their
profession in every country of the EU). Although it is still relatively young, it has come fully
into its own, didactically and culturally, and enjoys a high reputation both in Italy and abroad.
When it was founded, it was decided to limit matriculations to little more than 200 students a
year, which has made it possible to maintain over the years a good balance between teacher and
student numbers, an indispensable condition for effective teaching and a stimulating intellectual
atmosphere.
The faculty offers a basic three-year course terminating in a first degree in
Architecture, and a further two-year course, with three alternative syllabuses, leading to a higher
degree in Architecture. The syllabuses are town planning, architectural design, and restoration,
which make up the deepest, most vital (and also extraordinarily complex and critical) nucleus of
the Italian architectural tradition. The third level of university teaching consists of a rich and
distinguished array of specialisation courses and Masters (at I and II level) and doctoral courses.
For one of these, the 'Villard' doctorate, the faculty collaborates with a large group of Italian
and foreign institutes; the other doctoral courses, coordinated by a School, are run by departments
that are part of the faculty.
